This assignment that I've down was an essay. This essay was for English class and it was about the Hokulea, a polynesian ship that sailed across the Pacific Ocean under the command of Nainoa Thompson. Nainoa Thompson is a navigator, and someone who is part of the Polynesian Voyaging club, and is the actual owner of the club. During his first voyages he sailed to Tahiti. His navigator was Maui Pialiug, one of the best Polynesian navigators that was interested to navigate on the Hokulea. On his second trip his crewmate Eddie Aikau died while searching for rescue due to the terrible weather. After this Nainoa trained for years to become a navigator under Mau's teachings. This book was really fun to read and I enjoyed learning about the navigation history of Hawaii.
I chose this as a work sample because it was very fun to do, we did 3 assignments for the class regarding the Hokulea and it was very easy and fun to do. I enjoyed and was looking forward to write and read more about this book.
The 21st century skills I used, was global awarness because I was studying things outside my comfort zone, I don't usually read a lot of books and this was a really cool experience for me. This assignment is an example of global awareness because there aren't many more experienced navigators in the world, and I studied and read about some of the greatest.
The essay that I made shows that I wrote with good grammar and it shows I had a good understanding about what I read. I used some good word choice and really put a good amount of effort into it.
Something that I could of went over, was how Nainoa was feeling after Eddie Aikau's death, I didn't really include it and that was a major part in him taking a break and learning how to navigate.

Some things Nainoa Thompson changed during his voyage was Nainoa’s navigational skills. During his other 2 voyages his navigator was Mau Piailug, during the time between Eddie Akou’s death and the 3rd voyage Mau was teaching Nainoah how to navigate. He taught Nainoa about star patterns, teaching Nainoah about voyaging and about the heritage of voyaging and their culture.
During his training navigating he practiced over the sea and all he could use was stars and ocean cues. He would only be told if the waters were dangerous or not. At the end of the practice someone would grade him and see if he did well or bad. Mau truly was one of the only polynesian navigators that was willing to help Nainoa, and he really did help Nainoa become one of the most important navigators in Hawaiian history.
Nainoa learned about winds, and the cloud formations. Whether or not it would rain or it would be a sunny day. He learned all of this little by little from Mau. Mau did not just teach him everything he knew, he made him write it down with pencil and paper so that he would truly understand and learn how to navigate. After he was prepared and learned how to navigate, they went back to Tahiti, and did the same voyage as last. Nainoa was navigating but Mau would be alongside him incase anything were to happen.
